I started off my discus journey with 2.5" from premier German & American breeders, both of which had 25-30% mortality rates over 2 years(some from my learning process and others random). To keep my school numbers up, i opted to try these five mature 5" Pigeon Blood from Austin Texas Discus. All arrived healthy & ready to eat, settled into the group by day 2. Several months in and not 1 has showed any signs of illness.
The photos include a mix of the 5" Pigeon Blood next to some of their more mature tankmates to provide a comparison from a range of breeders. These Pigeon Bloods are nearly full grown, but have some weight to gain before they really bulk out. 2 of the 5 have heavy peppering along the top fin(heavy enough it looks patterned), but the other 3 are pepper-free. Nobody has paired off yet, but some of them were already jockeying over one of my gals that was laying.
Austin Texas Discus breeds as beautiful / healthy / lively as any anyone out there. If you are starting a new school or need larger fish to add to an existing one, this is a wonderful option!
This is the second time within the past month I’ve ordered the breeder package and was more than satisfied with both deliveries. I’ve got several other orders from these guys and everything is truly amazing.
The breeder package of discus arrived last Tuesday (7 days ago). 2 nights ago one of the discus showed signs of a fungal infection. I keep all my tanks between 82-84F, established tank, stable parameters with test strips, use quarantine tanks for new fish, aged water, Paraguard to treat for diseases. All to say this isn’t the first time around the block with discus for me. This morning I woke up to 2 of the 5 passed away. I keep 2 display tanks of discus and haven’t had this happen before. I don’t want to pin this on ATD, I understand that sometimes fish just don’t make it. I am just stating my experience, and am bummed out. The fish are very beautiful. Like I said I have mixed feelings, and am hoping the other 3 pull through.
Fish are big and beautiful, they swim all day back and forth up and down.
Super good quality discus, and great packaging!
